Do You Know Your Democracy? – Live Game

A card game adapted from the online experience at your-democracy.eu

Do You Know Your Democracy is an interactive card game designed for youth work settings, workshops, and educational events. It is adapted from the online game available at your-democracy.eu, bringing the experience into a live, face-to-face format that encourages discussion, critical thinking, and friendly competition.

The game is organised into four thematic sets – called Worlds – each of which can be played independently as a standalone session:

  • World 1: Understanding Democracy
  • World 2: Media Literacy
  • World 3: Active Citizenship & Participation
  • World 4:

Each World takes 45 to 60 minutes to play, making it easy to fit into a single workshop slot, a youth club session, or as part of a larger programme.

How to use it in youth work and educational events

Each World set includes everything you need: question cards, answer cards, curveball cards that introduce unexpected twists, and reflection cards to guide a group discussion at the end. A facilitator guide and score sheet are included in every download.

The game works best with groups of 4 to 12 participants, either playing individually or in small teams of 3 to 4. No special equipment is needed – just a printer, scissors, and a room to play in.

A few practical notes for facilitators:

  • Print and cut the cards before the session. Keep each card type in a separate pile so setup is quick.
  • Plan 10 to 15 minutes after the game for the reflection cards – this is often where the most valuable conversation happens.
  • You do not need to be an expert on the topic to facilitate. The facilitator guide includes all correct answers, feedback texts, and notes on how to handle each curveball and reflection question.
  • Each World can be used on its own – you do not need to play all four in sequence. Choose the theme that fits your group’s needs or the focus of your event.
  • The game works well as an icebreaker, a closing activity, or the centrepiece of a themed workshop on democracy, media, or civic engagement.
